* Sunday, July 3rd
Our First stop.
We had a great day today.
We stopped at Buckees for a snack and then ate lunch at whataburger. We arrived at camp at 1:30 and checked in. We share a campsite with another troop. We got our gear in our tents and our cots all set up then went for a tour of the camp. The trading post is 25 yards from our campsite, very convenient.
We are centrally located so we are very lucky as we don't have far to go to all the program areas. We then went to the pool for the swim test for the guys who need it. Then back to the campsite to hang out till dinner.
Dinner was grilled pork chops, scallop potatoes green beans and a salad bar. It was the best camp dinner I have had in my years of Summer camp. Then back to camp to hangout, shower and go to bed. The SPL (Joe) has them all in bed by 10:30. We are keeping our tradition by having a scout visit health lodge the first day. He was a bit over heated and slightly dehydrated. An hour in the AC and the threat of a big needle got the scout back to normal and promising to drink lots of water.
Good night .
Andy
* Monday, July 4th
Today we had cereal, muffins and kolaches for breakfast.
We ate it in our campsite. All then were off to the trading post before going to merit badge class.
Everyone is having a good time. Most everyone went to the correct merit badge classes.
The Archers learned range safety, the horsemen learned about saddles and other horse stuff, swimmers swum, and handicrafters learned tool safety.
The "items" to purchase from the trading post are blackwidow knives and harmonicas.
We have lots of cutting and noise around camp.
We had one injury to day, a brave scout jumped in the way of a line drive tennis ball to save the Scoutmaster.
He survived and the Scoutmaster is very grateful.
The scouts were playing stick ball in the campsite and invited the scouts from the next campsite to join in.
The boys caught a snake and we now we have a mascot.
Dinner was Salsbury steak, mashed potatoes and mixed veggies.
Everyone is in very good spirits, and thanks for the mail.
Andy.
* Tuesday, July 5th
We caught a frog, so our stable continues to increase.
Breakfast was eggs in a bag, sausage and Indian fry bread (fried biscuit dough) and donuts ( deep fried biscuit dough).
Horsemen learn how to saddle a horse and put in the bridle. Swimmers swam some more. Archers made an arrow.
Mr Doby challenged the scouts to get 3 rifle shots inside a quarter at the troop shoot, to get an ice cream. Mr Doby is now broke.
Dinner was the best, barbecue chicken, all you could eat and chocolate cake.
There was knife throwing at the Indian village.
Wilderness survivalist learned how to survive in a desert and in the middle of a snow storm.
Leather workers made wrist bands. First aiders learned how to bandage heads and ankles.
Time flys when your having fun.
Andy.
* Wednesday, July 6th
French toast and sausage.
We finished a lot of merit badges today. Some scouts are taking additional badges.
Horsemen took a test on how to care for the horses, types and the different parts of the horse.
Wilderness survivalists learned how to build shelters in preparation of their overnight tomorrow night.
Climbers climbed the wall.
Swimmers practiced diving and had to dive for rings underwater.
One of our scouts wants me to pass this message along, he misses his mom and please don't mess with his room.Several of our scouts took a 5 mile hike and had a very god time and the view of the sunset from sentinel peak, the highest point in the camp, was "amazing"!
The archers shot the arrows to try to qualify for the merit badge. Several qualified, some have to shoot more tomorrow.
One of our scouts wants you to know that he spent all his money on Monday ($50) and telling him not to today in a letter was too late.
Hamburgers for dinner.
Two of our scouts were caught throwing rocks at each other and so had to wash everyone's dishes at breakfast, we had syrup on our French toast.
I was challenged to a shoot off at the archery range, I won't tell who won.
The troop had a troop climb at the tower this evening. Most all made it to the top of the 42 foot tower. Our
SPL just missed the climbing speed record by 4 seconds.
Andy
* Thursday, July 7th
Breakfast burritos
Hamburgers that looked like McRibs for lunch
Fajitas for Dinner
The scouts are making pop corn now.
All merit badge classes are done. Only make up work tomorrow and waterfest at the pool in the afternoon (water contests) and whitewater kayaking merit badge.
All archery guys qualified in shooting today.
First aid MB is almost complete, as they were given CPR training tonight. The only thing left for them to do is make two first aid kits, one a personal one and one for home. They should do this over the remainder of the summer, the list of supplies needed is in the scout book.
The wilderness survival guys are out on the overnight, making a shelter to sleep in tonight.
One scout cut his finger while whittling, it's only a flesh wound, I'm sure he's had worse.
We have had eight scouts advance in rank and one advance two ranks and all others working on skills as well.
We had a troop swim tonight after dinner, got us cooled down.
We had the scoutmaster cook off today, we made lasagna. The judges asked for seconds. The results will be announced at the campfire tomorrow. It was very stiff competition.
The SPLs air mattress mysteriously lost all it's air today.
We are tired and ready to come home but all in good spirits.
Andy
* Friday, July 8th
Longest day so far. Whitewater kayaking. Paddled up stream. Went over 4 ft water fall and 14 ft water fall. One scout went over backwards. Some scouts were upside down almost more than they were up right.
The rest of the troop hung aroung camp then went to aqua festival, a series of water contests in the pool.
Diving for stuff, relay race, PFD race, scoutmaster cannon ball, and drown the staff member. We had fun.
After dinner (BBQ) some scouts went to the rodeo, some hiked up to sential peak (highest point in camp) and some hung around campsite getting a head start packing.
We won the scoutmaster shoot and scoutmaster cook off.
We plan to leave as early as possible, hope to get home around noon. We will send emails of eta when we get on the road and after we stop for lunch.
See ya tomorrow.
Andy
